Domesticity and Territory
_________________________

In 2005 Pedro Duarte Bento started a systematic process of photo-documentation of the landscape in a form of visual essays. Initially focused in industrial atmospheres, such as the ship-breaking yards in India and Bangladesh, the subjects rapidly extended into peripheral and suburban residential areas of developed and developing countries alike. Guided by Stanley Cavell's fabulous expression of the "Uncanniness of the Ordinary", this continuous and evolving body-of-work is committed to documenting the real —sometimes surreal—, unfiltered, common, banal stages where everyday life occurs. The themes Domesticity (as domestic environment) and Territory (as geo-cultural identity) are central pieces of these visual narratives, in which most of the times the effects of modernization, urbanization, social alienation and deculturation processes tend to be the main protagonists.

Over the years, the essays have been showcased in individual or group exhibitions. Some became part of important photography and ethnography collections such as BESArte/Novo Banco and Museu do Oriente. Some are shot in digital, some in analog film — both medium and large formats.
